![]() Lucky for us, Drucker’s Silent Hill 2 is both good and fun. In fact, it’s quite the opposite, as Duncan writes in a tone that’s both informative and entertaining, particularly when he throws shade at the game’s protagonist for being both excessively boring and also an awful, awful person.Īs mentioned before, Silent Hill 2 is a good game, if not a fun one. But even still, things never get dry and academic. Factor in a bunch of citations from books and articles about horror in general, Silent Hill 2 is downright educational. Partly because Silent Hill 2 has a surprising amount of academic research written about it– in particular, the work of Ewan Kirkland is cited multiple times throughout the book. Silent Hill 2 is definitely on the more academic end of the spectrum of Boss Fight Books. Early on, Duncan notes the Silent Hill games are are explorations of American surrealist horror a-la Twin Peaks or Jacob’s Ladder, as done by a Japanese video game developer, which is one of the things that make them so wonderfully weird. Drucker gives each of the game’s character a chapter’s worth of analysis, and also explores some of the bigger themes presented by the town itself. This said, even though I’m not super into the series, I still found Drucker’s Silent Hill 2 to be an interesting and informative exploration of the game. Later, in college, I had a roommate who played through Silent Hills 1 & 2 in preparation for the release of Silent Hill 3, so I at least absorbed some of the stuff about rust-world and Pyramid Head and whatnot via osmosis. When it first came out, my horror-loving best friend scooped it right up– and promptly got mad at me and the other guy hanging out at his place when we kept making snide commentary about the game’s slow burn of an opening. I honestly haven’t played Silent Hill 2 all that much– rather, it’s a game I watched someone else play. As on the surface it looks like a survival horror romp a-la Resident Evil, but the game is more interested in exploring themes of abuse, neglect, depression, murder, and suicide. ![]() Drucker makes a very good point in the book that Silent Hill 2 is certainly a good game, but really not a fun one. Mike Drucker’s Silent Hill 2 leans towards the latter, though he does mention some of his own personal experiences throughout.įor those who might not be familiar with Silent Hill 2, it’s a video game of psychological horror, released by Konami in 2001 (you know, back when Konami still made good games). After a further wait (we had now been waiting an hour and a half), I went to try and find him. When he arrived, he drove straight past us, and didn’t stop to acknowledge us or reassure us he was going to sort things out. We waited at reception at the entrance to the site. He told us he was on his way up from the town. We called the out-of-hours numbers several times until someone eventually answered, and we spoke to a manager. We tried to talk to staff in the kitchen and elsewhere onsite, but they were rude and not interested in helping us. Following World War II, Layman returned to the Parkersburg Fire Department and applied the indirect attack method to structural fires. But all-in-all, it's worth the time, especially to those interested in the Castlevania series, but even to those unfamiliar with it and in search of a gritty, well-animated, well- acted piece of dark medieval fantasy.Racked is no longer publishing. Four ~23 minute episodes is not that much content, and it makes me wonder whether Netflix wouldn't have been better served to put this "season" out as a feature-length prologue film instead in order to advertise a lengthier season 2. My only complaint here is the brevity of the series. He does a fantastic job as Trevor Belmont. The English voice cast shines as well, with Armitage's performance standing out among the others. Animated features and series have been steadily improving since the dawn of the HD era, and Castlevania continue to represent them well. The animation is very good, and the art in particular is superb. Fans of the series need not worry, plenty of the classic Castlevania feel is here, treated with proper reverence by the shows writers and directors. It's refreshing considering that the original owners of the Castlevania IP, Konami, have taken an obvious downturn in the quality production of their various legendary properties recently in favor of instead developing pachinko and gambling machines and firing longtime creative leads such as Hideo Kojima. The writers go straight for the jugular and pull no punches, obviously inspired by Berserk and other series like it. It's gratuitously violent, dark as pitch, and set in a medieval fantasy world. Castlevania, however, scratches much of that same itch. The 2016 production of Berserk has sadly skimped on production values, leaving fans of the longtime manga series with a sour taste in their mouths. Make no mistake this is animated fare strictly for adults.
